Message de remerciement à la CSN d’un membre de la délégation Solidarité Asie-Québec

Dear President Claudette Carbonneau and CSN members,
I am Yeyong CHOI working for a Korean environmental group, (KFEM) Korean Federation for Environmental Movement. I am the executive director of BANKO (Ban Asbestos Network Korea). I was part of the Asian delegation that came to Quebec last December.
Yesterday I heard that CSN is going to vote on a new policy on asbestos that is against reviving the Quebec asbestos industry and in favour of working towards banning asbestos and helping the asbestos workers to transition to other work.
It is terrific news indeed particularly for all of us who were part of the Asian delegation who came to Quebec in December 2010. We thank all the CSN members for your terrific solidarity. We hope we can work with you to protect people everywhere from asbestos disease. We have now banned asbestos in Korea but we have many asbestos victims. We want to protect people in other countries from being harmed by asbestos. We want no more asbestos victims anywhere.
On behalf of Korean workers, citizens and asbestos victims particularly, we thank you.
Best wishes

Dear President Claudette Carbonneau and CSN members,
My name is Omana George and I am the Programme Coordinator – working on the Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) Programme with the Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) in Hong Kong. We are a Regional labour rights NGO working in Asia – in particular India, Indonesia, Bangladesh , Thailand and Philippines among other countries in the region on issues of health and safety. I was part of the Asian delegation that came to Quebec last December. I am an Indian National and I do see this hazardous material being used extensively around my country and affecting innocent workers and people who come into contact with this deadly substance and who are oblivious to its long term effects on their health and its carcinogenic properties.
It has been very hard for us in fighting to stop the use of the asbestos when the Quebec and Canadian governments have been promoting its use and giving out the message that asbestos can be safely used in our countries, which is completely untrue.
Yesterday I heard that CSN is going to vote on a new policy on asbestos that is against reviving the asbestos industry in Quebec and in favour of working towards banning asbestos and helping the asbestos workers to transition to other safe work.
It is fantastic news indeed particularly for all of us who were part of the Asian delegation who were in Quebec- December 2010. We want to thank all the CSN members for your strong solidarity with workers and people in Asia whose health and lives would have been devastated with the asbestos from the mines of Quebec over the next few decades.
We hope we can work with you and continue in the future to protect people everywhere from asbestos exposure and disease. We want to protect people in Asia who have very little political and economic power to protect themselves and their families from being harmed by asbestos. We do not want asbestos victims anywhere in the world.
We sincerely on behalf of workers, victims and communities in India, thank you for your support,
In Solidarity,
Omana George
